Jazz Bands

The Newport Jazz Band program is well-known regionally, nationally and internationally. All three ensembles (Jazz I, II and III) are audition-based and have daily rehearsals at 6:30am throughout the school year. These musicians work hard!
Jazz I's recent accolades are rather long, including past participation in Essentially Ellington in New York and Swing Central in Savannah, Georgia. Participation in such festivals certainly places the Jazz program among the best in the country. The reasons for these successes are many, but all begin with the unique structure of our Jazz Program here at Newport.
Rehearsals and Sectionals
Students always find a place to learn jazz at Newport - with three separate daily rehearsing bands, students are guaranteed a spot after they complete the audition process. Once a member, these students receive instruction designed to give them the necessary skills to perform and compete at the highest level they possibly can. Students receive, as part of their membership in the bands, complimentary Sectional Instruction from Music Works Northwest, providing our students with the unique opportunity to refine their technique within their instrumental section under the guidance of local professionals.
Guest Artists
In addition, recent well-known guest artists to work with the band include Wycliffe Gordon, Tom Scott, G.E. Smith and Ronald Carter. The opportunity to meet and learn from these fantastic jazz leaders has proven to be among our students' favorite high school memories, and an integral part of their music education.
Students have the chance to perform in an extensive variety of venues. Regional festivals in the fall, the Holiday Concert in December, Crossroads mall in January, Jazz Festivals in February, competitions in the spring, home and zone concerts throughout the spring semester... students are never short on opportunities to perform for an audience. This exciting and dynamic performing experience gives students that chance to refine their stage skills and soloing abilities.
Policy on Weather-Related School Closures
School Closure: no jazz band.

Delayed Starts: if school is delayed one hour, jazz band will start at 7:30am. For a two-hour delay, jazz will start at 8:30am.
No Decision by 6:30am: if the weather looks significantly awful and BSD hasn't made a call yet, each director will use the texting tree to stay in contact with everyone and cancel if necessary.
